Nucleophilic substitution reaction of Cl in 4-ClC6H4NO2 by N-anions from RNH2 (R = C6F5, 4-O2NC6H4, tetrafluoro-4-pyridyl, 4-NCC6F4) to give the corresponding diarylamines was studied in solvents of different polarity (PhMe and DMSO). The reactivity of these nitranions is 2 orders of magnitude higher in DMSO. Such a difference is attributed to the different reacting species (ion pairs vs. free ions in PhMe and DMSO, resp.). The ¦ÂNu values obtained (0.31 and 0.26), very similar and relatively low, suggest a moderate extent of charge transfer from nucleophile to substrate in the transition state of both systems.

Although side-chain polyazobenzenes have been extensively studied, main-chain polyazobenzenes (abbreviated MCPABs) are rarely reported due to the challenges associated with difficulty in synthetic chem. and photoisomerization of azo bonds in MCPABs. Thus, it is highly demanded to develop new mechanisms other than photoisomerization of azo bonds in MCPABs to extend their applications. In this work, we created a new series of N-linked MCPABs via fast NaBH4-mediated reductive coupling polymerization on N-substituted bis(4-nitrophenyl)amines. The structure of MCPABs has been characterized by comprehensive solid-state NMR experiments such as CPMAS 13C NMR with long and short contact times, cross-polarization polarization-inversion (CPPI), and cross-polarization nonquaternary suppressed (CPNQS). The azo bonds in MCPABs were found to be promising for acid vapor sensing, being acidified to form azonium ion with significant color change from red to green. And the azonium of MCPABs turned from green to red when exposed to base vapor, thus suitable for base vapor sensing.

The ir, uv, and Raman spectra of PhNO2 and p-XHNC6H4NO2 in the vapor and in solution in different solvents were compared. For amino derivatives, 2 bands in the frequency region of NO2-groups, ¦Ø8, were characteristic. These were sensitive to solvents and temperature The effect of solvents on the vibration frequency of the nitrile groups, ¦ØCN, was similar for p-H2NC6H4NO2 and p-Me2NC6H4NO2 but was much weaker than the effect on ¦Ø8. Alkylation of the amino group affected the frequency of the NO2 group to a much greater degree than that of the NH2 group. This was true not only of solutions but also of vapors suggesting the possibility that in isolated mols. the NO2 group affects the rigidity of the N-O bond through the system of ¦Ð-bonds of the C6H6 ring. In neutral solvents and in the gaseous phase ¦Ø8 of derivatives with X = NH2, Ph, and H2NC6H4 was about the same. This was also true of 4,3,5-H2NX2C6H2NO2, where X = H, Cl, Br.

The IR spectra of several compounds containing the nitro group were studied. Based on these and previous data, the state of the nitro group depending on the structure of the fragments bound to the nitrophenyl group was discussed. The redistribution of the electron d. during vibrations of the nitro group and the substituent atoms was considered. The effects of the ¦Ð-bond system, bridging atoms separating the nitrophenyl group from the substituents, and heavy atoms adjacent to the bridging atom were characterized. The data obtained facilitates the selection of mol. structures satisfying the specified requirements of practical applications.

A reversed phase gradient ultra performance liquid chromatog. tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS/MS) method has been developed for the anal. of smokeless powders. A total of 20 different components were separated by UPLC and detected by MS/MS in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. These compounds included diphenylamines, centralites, nitrotoluenes, nitroglycerin, and various phthalates. Simultaneous pos. and neg. electrospray ionization (ESI) was used along with neg. atm. pressure chem. ionization (APCI) to detect all compounds in a single anal. Anal. times were under 8 min with a gradient of 10-73% organic at a flow rate of 0.500 mL/min. With this method, UV and MRM limits of detection ranging from 0.08 to 2.6 ng and 0.4-64 ng injected were achieved. Com. available smokeless powders were also extracted with methylene chloride and characterized using the developed UPLC/MS/MS method. The procedure permits the determination of compositional differences between different brands as well as lot-to-lot variations.

The influence of solvent and H bonds on the frequencies and integral intensities of the bands of symmetry (vs. As) and anti-symmetry (¦Ías, Aas) of nitro group valence vibrations was studied in an investigation of the infrared spectra of nitro compounds The accuracy of the frequency determination was ¡À0.5 cm.-1, and of the integral intensity, was 5-10%. For PhNO2 and MeNO2 in such solvents as cyclohexane, CCl4, dioxane, CHCl3, CHBr3, tetrachloroethylene, BuOH, and piperidine, the intensity changes and frequency shifts of both bands were insignificant. The bands of the valence vibrations of the nitro group were only slightly susceptible to internal interactions and to H bonding. Splitting of the vs bands was indicated for all aromatic p-nitro amino compounds, such as p-nitroaniline, p-nitrodimethylaniline, and p-nitrodiethylaniline. The infrared absorption spectra of solutions of p-nitroaniline and p-nitrodimethylaniline in CHCl3 and dioxane are presented. The behavior of the ¦Ís components of p-nitroaniline in dioxane indicated that formation of H bonds between the NH2 and dioxane influenced the C-N vibration so as to change the condition for resonance of NO2 and CN, as well as the intensity distribution. Such behavior was lacking in p-nitrodi- methylaniline, where there is no NH linkage.
