GGG was selectively floated from GC by using dodecylammonium acetate as a collector, H2SO4 or H3PO4 as an activator for GGG, and starch as a depressor for GC. The activation of GGG with H2SO4 is caused by the specific adsorption of sulfate ion and by the chem. interaction between sulfate ion and dodecylammonium ion on the GGG surface.

Flotation was applied for the separation of Fe(OH)3 and gypsum formed in neutralizing the acid drain from an Fe sulfide mine by CaCO3 or Ca(OH)2. The flotation of precipitate obtained from the water containing 1 g Fe3+/L and 6 g SO42-/L was by dodecylammonium?acetate??[2016-56-0]. The selectivity was affected by the rate of neutralization. Satisfactory results were obtained only when the aging process was introduced in the neutralization at pH 2.9. Starch acted as a selective flocculant as well as a depressor for Fe(OH)3, and gave satisfactory selectivity even when a rapid neutralization was adopted. These flotation products are upgraded by washing with small volume of water or an acidified saturated solution of gypsum.

Nonpathogenic strains such as Bacillus subtilis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Acinetobacter calcoaceticus have been successfully tested for removing alkylsulfates, alkylamines and fatty acids from solutions simulating flotation plant tailings waters. Removals of ¡Ü90% in <48 h can be easily achieved with no nutrient requirements, since in most cases the flotation reagent residue to be removed is metabolized by the microorganisms themselves.

In the light of the adsorption difference of cationic collectors on quartz and apatite, an addnl. hydrogen bond functional group can be introduced into the traditional collector mol.-dodecylammonium acetate (DDA) to achieve high-efficient separation of minerals. In this study, a new surfactant-N-(2-hydroxy-1, 1-dimethylethyl) dodecylamine (HDMEA) was synthesized in our laboratory and acted as a new-type amine collector in the reverse flotation separation of apatite from quartz. The results of micro-flotation tests indicated that the separation performance of HDMEA was significantly better than that of DDA. When the concentration of HDMEA was 20 mg/L at pH 6.43, the apatite with 38.57% grade and 95.8% recovery could be achieved in mixed-flotation tests. The adsorption mechanism of DDA and HDMEA on quartz and apatite was comparably explored by the measurements of zeta potential, FTIR, contact angle, and AFM as well as the DFT calculations These results demonstrated that improving the hydrogen bonds adsorption on quartz (by -NH- and -OH groups) and increasing the steric-hindrance effect on apatite help to achieve efficient flotation separation of quartz and apatite.

The radii of mixed ionic-zwitterionic micelles have been obtained from micellar self-diffusion data by taking intermicellar interactions into account via a kinetic theory of Brownian motion. Exptl. self-diffusion data of counterions, surfactants, and micellar aggregates were obtained for the complete composition interval for the systems (dodecyldimethylammonio)propanesulfonate (DDAPS)/Li dodecylsulfate and DDAPS/dodecylammonium acetate. A considerably different dependence of mixed micellar radius on composition was observed in the 2 systems. Aggregates containing the anionic amphiphile were found to be larger than the corresponding cationic mixed micelles throughout the complete composition interval. As a check for consistency, the micellar radii were used as input values in model calculations of fractional ion binding ratios. A good agreement was observed with exptl. ion association data.
