Experiments using an optically polished Pyrex disk and aqueous dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) films showed that the velocity with which the films recede increases markedly if the runs are repeated at short time intervals, where equilibrium cannot be reattained. This behavior results from DAA mols. being desorbed from the disappearing liquid/air interface and being deposited on the solid/air interface being formed. Controlled experiments with Pyrex glass particles in a modified Hallimond tube showed a similar increase in flotation rate, again due to excess adsorption of DAA mols. that were transferred to the solid-air interface from the bubbles on contact.

This paper presents a study on the shear flocculation of fine (38 ¦Ìm) hematite using dodecylamine acetate and Aero 801 (a mixture of petroleum sulfonate and mineral oil) as collectors. The effects of pH, collector concentration and stirrer speed were investigated. In addition, contact angle and flotation recoveries of the mineral were determined at different pH values. The results indicated that shear flocculation was possible over a wide pH range with the amine, whereas it was restricted to a narrow pH range (2.5-3.5) with Aero 801. This was attributed to the better hydrophobicity of the mineral, indicated by higher flotation recoveries and contact angles within the same ranges.

Based on the crystal structure and surface properties of diaspore and kaolinite, an effective diaspore depressant, CPAM (cationic polyacrylamide) was identified based on single mineral tests, separation of synthetic mixed minerals, zeta potential, and adsorption measurements. The reverse flotation separation of diaspore and kaolinite can be carried out using dodecylamine acetate as collector and CPAM depressant at pH 5.5-8.5. The diaspore particles show large amount of active aluminum atoms that can bond with -C(O)NH2 groups in CPAM and the -CH2N+(CH3)3 groups in CPAM orient toward the outer surfaces of diaspore and prevent a majority of dodecylamine cations from adsorbing on diaspore, enhancing hydrophilicity of diaspore, and depressing floatability of diaspore particles. As for kaolinite, CPAM polymers have little effect on floatability.

Using sodium oleate and dodecylamine acetate (DAA) as compound collector, sodium metasilicate as regulator, low grade pinnoite (MgO¡¤B2O3¡¤3H2O) mineral from Dachaidan areas of Qinghai province, was concentrated by reverse flotation. The results indicated that pinnoite can be separated from gypsum, basic magnesium carbonate and salt by reverse flotation. Based on experiments, suitable processing parameters were obtained as follows: collectors dodecylamine acetate 1.5 kg/t, sodium oleate 0.15kg/t, regulator sodium metasilicate 0.92kg/t, liquid-to-solid ratio 6:1, flotation temperature 30-35¡ãC and time 10 min, hydrogen ion concentration of ore pulp 9.0-9.2. Under above conditions, the mass fraction of B2O3 in concentrate increased from 7.82% to 12.3% by first flotation, and recovery of boron was over 60%.

During slow-cooling crystallization of ironmaking blast-furnace slags, most rare earth elements recrystallize in an artificial “mineral” identified as calcium cerite. Scandium (Sc) and europium (Eu), however, concentrate in a sheetlike “mineral”. The mineralogy of this sheetlike “mineral” was studied. It was identified as being in the mica group and was called a rare earth-bearing barium fluorophlogopite. It can be effectively recovered from the slag by flotation using dodecylammonium acetate or a combination of dodecylammonium acetate and sodium oleate as collectors.

The effects of ammonium-based ionic liquid and crosslinking polyether demulsifier NJ-20 complexes on the dehydration of simulated crude oil emulsion were studied. The results showed that, when the dosage of the demulsifier complexes was 200 mg/L and the temperature was 50 degree, the dehydration rate reached 75% and 91%, resp., in 2 h. With sep. polyether demulsifier NJ-20, the dehydration rate was only 65% under the same conditions. When the dosage was 200 mg/L and the temperature was 40degree, the dehydration rate reached 59% in 2 h, which was much higher than that of polyether demulsifier NJ-20, displaying strong low-temperature demulsification effect.

Acid drainage from base metal mine generally contains considerable amounts of Fe2+, Al3+, and SO42-. Such drainage is usually neutralized by CaCO3 or Ca(OH)2 after the oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+. The precipitates thus formed, which consist mainly of Fe(OH)3, Al(OH)3, and gypsum, are dumped into a mill tailing dam. In order to utilize these precipitates, the separation of Al(OH)3 and gypsum by flotation was investigated. The flotability of Al(OH)3 and gypsum was examined at various pH using dodecylammonium acetate, Na dodecyl sulfate, and Na oleate as collector. Dodecylammonium acetate was the most suitable. With a synthetic mixture of Al(OH)3 and gypsum and dodecylammonium acetate as the collector, separation was good at pH 4-9. An artificial acid mine water containing Al3+ 500 and SO42- 6000 mg/L was neutralized by CaCO3 and the flotation was conducted with dodecylammonium acetate as the collector and starch the depressor for the Al(OH)3, resulting in remarkable selectivity improvement. More than 90% of the gypsum was recovered in the froth and ?95% of the Al(OH)3 in the sink.
