The flotation separation of LiTaO3 (I) from green carborundum (A) slicing dust was investigated. Only with surfactant were both I and A floated at any pH. Floatability of I was enhanced by HF with use of dodecylamine acetate at pH 2, whereas that of A was depressed by gum arabic. Application of this method to slicing dust containing 9.9% I gave 91.2% recovery of I with 70.8% purity in the froth.

The effects of granulated KCl fertilizer hydrophobization on granule water absorption and KCl solubility were studied with the aim to find treatments improving the granule transport and storage stability and resistance to caking. The granules were treated with C12-C16 aliphatic amines in free or salt (acetate, chloride) forms, with free fatty acids (C4, C5, C6, C7, oleic, linoleic, linolenic), with fatty acid tech. mixtures, petroleum hydrocarbons, and their combinations. Free amines and their acetate salts were more effective in hydrophobization than chloride salts; the effects also increased with the amine chain length. The fatty acids were inferior to amines in the hydrophobization effects. Combined treatments with fatty amines, fatty acids, and non-polar hydrocarbons were very effective in waterproofing the KCl granules, providing up to 60% hydrophobization and 96-97% dynamic strength.

A procedure for detection of bacteria degrading cationic surface-active substances (CSAS) was developed. The procedure is based on the color of pyrocatechin violet, an organic dye, changing from green-blue in the presence of CSAS to red-brown in its absence. After application of pyrocatechin violet to bacterial macrocolonies grown on a synthetic medium with a CSAS as the only source of C, red-brown zones develope around the colonies, which is indicative of CSAS degradation A total of 55 strains of bacteria degrading undecylpyridinium bromide were isolated from water and sewage purification plants. Six bacterial strains degraded all 9 surfactants tested. Degradability was related to the presence of a long C chain, with branching, and a substituent in the aromatic ring. The procedure may be used for the rapid determination of degradation of CSASs with different chem. structures.

NMR spectra for aqueous micellar solutions of C12-C18-aliphatic amine acetate surfactants modified by solubilization of oleophilic organic compounds showed that the action of the solubilizate on the structure and ionic-mol. composition of the micellar solutions depended both on the length of the hydrocarbon portion of the surfactant and on the nature of the solubilizate. For C12 and C14 amines, the greatest structure changes were observed during colloidal dissolution of heptanol, caprylic acid, and ¦Á-naphthol. Heptane, naphthalene, and benzene had little or no influence on the micellar structure. C16 and C18 amines were more susceptible to the changes than C12 or C14 amines. In the case of C18 amine, practically all of the solubilizates caused loosening of the micelle and increased ionization of polar groups. In sylvinite ore enrichment by flotation, the addition of oleophilic compounds had the greatest effect on C18 amine in increasing its flotation activity.

In this study, steps were taken toward the development of bactericidal and fungicidal synthetic cationic surfactants by reacting decyl-, dodecyl- or tetradecylamine with acetic or hydrochloric acid to produce a series of amine salts which consequently converted to copper or cobalt cationic complexes via complexing the first series compounds with copper (II) or cobalt (II) ions. Surface properties such as interfacial tension and emulsifying power of these surfactants were investigated. The surface parameters including critical micelle concentration (CMC), maximum surface excess (¦£max) and min. surface area (Amin) were studied. Free energy of micellization (¦¤Gomic) and adsorption (¦¤Goads) were calculated The antimicrobial activity was determined via the inhibition zone diameter of the prepared compounds, which measured against five strains of a representative group of microorganisms. FTIR spectra, elemental anal. and H1 NMR spectrum were performed to confirm compound structure and purity.

The complexation constants K of ¦Â-cyclodextrin with 13 ammonium surfactants were determined by a potentiometric method using electrodes selective to amphiphilic ions. Especially for C12-16-alkyl groups, a model that provides for the formation of a second complex, with a K1/K2 ratio of ?600, provided a good fit with the exptl. curves. There was a poor influence of the polar group, for example in the case of the dodecyl chain. On the other hand, the pK1 values and the hydrophobic tail length were linked by a linear relation up to C12; beyond pK1 tended to be proportionally smaller and pK2 more important.

YAG (Y-Al garnet) dust was recovered from the rock powder containing green carborundum (GC) by flotation process using dodecyl ammonium acetate (DAA) as a cationic collector, or Aero Promoter 845# (Mitsue Cyanamide Co.) as an anionic collector. A 5-g powder mixture (YAG(sp. surface area 2.20 m2/g)/GC(0.59 m2/g) = 1/4) was studied using a 200 cm3 Denver flotation tester under the routine operating conditions described previously (CF: F.Gu, I. Matsuoka, and M. Mamiya 1991). Influences of collector, acid (activator, pH), and depressor concentrations on zeta potentials and flotation recoveries of YAG and GC are presented and discussed. About 90% recovery of YAG can be obtained by 3 ¡Á 10-4 mol/dm3 concentration of DAA, 20 mg/dm3 corn starch as a depressor for GC, and 10-1 mol/dm3 H2SO4 or H2C2O4 as an activator. The oxalic acid is favorable with respect to high-grade flux. The AP845# was absorbed preferentially on the YAG surface, and can be used as an effective collector at 1.5 ¡Á 10-5 mol/dm3 and pH 1.5 ? 2.5, and 90% recovery was attained by 5 mg/dm3 corn starch and 4 mg/dm3 ¦Á-terpinol.
