Metal halide hydrates, such as SnCl2.2H2O, MnCl2.4H2O, SrCl2.6H2O, CrCl3.6H2O, CoCl2.6H2O, and CeCl3.7H2O, were investigated as mild Lewis acid catalysts for the conjugate Friedel-Crafts reaction between indoles and activated olefins. The reactions were carried out with aliphatic unsaturated ketones over a period of days at room temperature, while chalcones reacted only under reflux conditions. The reactions with nitrostyrenes were either performed in solvent or under solventless conditions. In all cases reasonable to good yields were obtained.

Charge-enhanced catalysis has emerged as a powerful alternative to the mainstream use of neutral catalysis. With this in mind, we report a catalytic Friedel-Crafts alkylation method catalyzed by a charged thiourea incorporating a cationic cyclopropenium moiety. Mechanistic studies, including d. functional theory computational calculations, variable time normalization anal., and 1H NMR binding studies, collectively reveal this charge-enhanced reactivity proceeds by a dual hydrogen bond-mediated LUMO-lowering mode of substrate activation. Key to these findings is the observed steady-state concentration of the catalyst with in situ derived monomeric catalytic species predominating under the reaction conditions.

Indium(0)-mediated reductions have been reported for the transformation of several functional groups (imines, oximes, nitro groups, isoxazolidines, and conjugated alkenes, among others), prompted by the opportunity of performing the reactions in aqueous media and green conditions. We describe here the comparison of several reactions using indium or the less expensive zinc, carried out in order to evaluate the effective advantages brought about indium metal. We found some reactions for which use of In is mandatory and others where Zn worked equally well or even better. The reduction of hydroxylamines to the corresponding amines was the only reduction for which use of In provided much better results than Zn and was also possible to apply an efficient catalytic version with use of 2-5 mol-% In in the presence of stoichiometric Zn. Applicability of this catalytic reduction to “one-pot” model processes is also demonstrated.

The 3-ketoproline scaffold was functionalized using various aromatic nitrostyrenes in the presence of a bifunctional organocatalyst. The resulting quaternary proline derivatives could easily be transformed into α-alkyl-β-hydroxyproline analogs. Furthermore, the methodol. could also be applied to the synthesis of 3-ketoproline functionalized peptides with high selectivity and good yields.

Lignosulfonate (LS) is an organic waste generated as a byproduct of the cooking process in sulfite pulping in the manufacture of paper. In this paper, LS was used as an anionic supporting material for immobilizing cationic species, which can then be used as heterogeneous catalysts in some organic transformations. With this strategy, three lignin-supported catalysts were prepared including (1) lignin-SO3Sc(OTf)2, (2) lignin-SO3Cu(OTf), and (3) lignin-IL@NH2 (IL=ionic liquid). These solid materials were then examined in many organic transformations. It was finally found that, compared with its homogeneous counterpart as well as some other solid catalysts that are prepared by using different supports with the same metal or catalytically active species, the lignin-supported catalysts showed better performance in these reactions not only in terms of activity but also with regard to recyclability.

The designed catalytic system provided a broader scope under short reaction times in good to excellent yields. Fe3O4@g-C3N4-SO3H could be simply recovered by magnetic separation using an external magnet, maintaining stable activity up to five cycles without appreciable loss of activity.
