The new complex [Dy(PDOA)(NO3)(H2O)2]n¡¤nH2O (1) (H2PDOA is o-phenylenedioxydiacetic acid) was isolated from the reaction of dysprosium(III) nitrate and H2PDOA in a 1:1 molar ratio. Its crystal structure is formed of neutral zigzag chains in which the nonacoordinated Dy(III) atoms (O9 donor set) are linked by PDOA ligands with a chelating-bridging coordination mode. DC and AC magnetic studies revealed that 1 behaves as a field-induced SMM with three relaxation channels. The derived values, considering the Orbach relaxation process, of the barrier to spin reversal and the extrapolated relaxation time are U/kB = 59.5 K and ¦Ó0 = 6.3 ¡Á 10-10 s, resp. Ab initio calculations support the exptl. results.

The coordination polymer [Gd(PDOA)(NO3)(H2O)2]n (1) (PDOA = o-phenylenedioxydiacetato) has been prepared and spectroscopically and structurally characterized. Its crystal structure is formed of a ribbon-like arrangement of Gd(III) atoms linked by bridging carboxylate groups and placed at the cusps of fused triangles with Gd¡¤¡¤¡¤Gd distances of ?6.1 ?. The Gd(III) central atoms exhibit decacoordination by oxygen atoms from hexadentate PDOA ligands with chelating and bridging functions, a chelating nitrato ligand and two aqua ligands. Intra- and intermol. hydrogen bonds of the O-H¡¤¡¤¡¤O and C-H¡¤¡¤¡¤O types contribute to the stability of the structure. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility revealed weak magnetic interactions among Gd(III) ions which may be attributed to dipolar coupling. Investigation of the magnetocaloric effect gives an estimate of the maximum value of isothermal change of magnetic entropy -¦¤Sm ¡Ö 35 J kg-1 K-1 which suggests that 1 can be a good material for magnetic cooling at low temperatures

Carbohydrate antigens with subterminal fucosylation have been implicated in the development and progression of several cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Fluorescent sensors targeting fucosylated carbohydrate antigens could potentially be used for diagnostic and other applications. The authors have designed and synthesized a series of 26 diboronic acid compounds as potential fluorescent sensors for such carbohydrates. Among these compounds, 7q was able to fluorescently label cells expressing high levels of sLex (HEPG2) within a concentration range of 0.5 to 10 ¦ÌM. This compound (7q) did not label cells expressing Lewis Y (HEP3B), nor cells without fucosylated antigens (COS7). This represents the first example of a fluorescent compound labeling cells based on cell surface carbohydrate structures.

The physicochem. characterization of these emerging groups was performed by determining their Hansch-Leo lipophilicity parameters with high values up to 2.24. Finally, this method was successfully applied to the functionalization of relevant bioactive mols. such as tocopherol I or estrone derivatives II (R1 = CF3, C6F13).

MnII/MnIII complexes [Mn(DGB)X2]0/+ and [Mn(BBB)2X]2+ were synthesized utilizing an exogenous anionic ligand (X = OAc, SCN) with tridentate bis(2-benzimidazolylmethyl)ether (DGB) and bidentate 1,2-bis(2-benzimidazolyloxamethyl)benzene (BBB) ligands. The visible spectra of the MnIII compounds suggests pseudo C4v symmetry, and the EPR data on the MnII complexes indicates a similar geometry. Cyclic-voltammetric studies reveal that the E1/2 for the MnII/MnIII couple shifts to a pos. value with acetate as an anionic ligand, implying that this anion stabilizes the MnII oxidation state while the E1/2 data for SCN reveals that the anion stabilizes the MnIII state. The reoxidation step of the superoxide formed in the cyclic-voltammetric experiments becomes irreversible in the presence of Mn complexes; suggesting that these complexes act as good quenchers for superoxide anion.
