A nickel-catalyzed synthesis of an aryl nitrile via aryl exchange between an aromatic amide and a simple nitrile was developed. By using cheap, easy-to-handle, and low-toxic 4-cyanopyridine as the cyanating source, cyanation of various aromatic amides afforded an assortment of aryl nitriles including bioactive drugs and organic luminescent mols. in good yields. The reaction exhibited wide substrate scope, good functional group tolerance, and unique selectivity that were complementary to traditional methods. Moreover, two key nickel complexes formed by oxidative addition to each substrate are obtained and determined by X-ray crystallog., which gave strong support for the mechanism elucidations.

A novel approach for C-N bond formation was developed by iron-catalyzed C-C bond cleavage. Anilines and sulfonamides reacted smoothly with 2-substituted 1,3-diphenylpropane-1,3-diones to afford N-alkylation products, in which the 1,3-dicarbonyl group acts as a leaving group in the presence of an iron catalyst. E.g., in presence of FeCl3.6H2O, alkylation of 4-O2NC6H4NH2 by I gave 90% II. The reversible C-C bond cleavage plays a driving force to give the thermodynamically stable products. The method is complementary to the previous methods for C-N bond formation.

During slow-cooling crystallization of ironmaking blast-furnace slags, most rare earth elements recrystallize in an artificial “mineral” identified as calcium cerite. Scandium (Sc) and europium (Eu), however, concentrate in a sheetlike “mineral”. The mineralogy of this sheetlike “mineral” was studied. It was identified as being in the mica group and was called a rare earth-bearing barium fluorophlogopite. It can be effectively recovered from the slag by flotation using dodecylammonium acetate or a combination of dodecylammonium acetate and sodium oleate as collectors.
