A new class of benzimidazole-substituted 8-hydroxyquinoline ligands was prepared that contain a monoanionic tridentate N,N,O-coordinating unit. These ligands, e.g., benzimidazolyl(hydroxy)quinoline I (HL) and methylenebis(hydroxyquinolinylbenzimidazole) II (L2) form charge-neutral lanthanide complexes [Ln(L-R)3]¡¤nH2O or [Ln2(L2)3]¡¤nH2O (n = 1-3) with early lanthanides from LaIII to GdIII inclusive. Crystallog. characterization was carried out for 11 complexes with 6 different ligands. In all of these structures, the lanthanide ion is nine-coordinated by three ligands arranged in an up-up-down fashion around the metal center. The coordination environment can be described as a tricapped trigonal prism, with N atoms of quinoline rings occupying capping positions. Upon deprotonation of the ligand and complex formation, a new absorption band appears in the visible range of the spectrum with a maximum at 466-483 nm and molar absorptivity of (7.2-18) ¡Á 103 M-1 cm-1. Its origin probably is an intraligand phenolate-to-pyridyl charge transfer transition centered on the 8-hydroxyquinolate chromophore. Upon excitation in ligand absorption bands, new NdIII complexes display characteristic metal-centered luminescence in the near-IR region from 850 to 1450 nm with quantum yields and lifetimes in solid state at room temperature ¡Ü0.34% and 1.2 ¦Ìs, resp.

Sila-substitution (C/Si exchange) of one or both of the two quaternary carbon atoms of the histaminic H1 antagonist terfenadine (1a) leads to sila-terfenadine-A (1b; R3COH ¡ú R3SiOH), sila-terfenadine-B (1c; R4C ¡ú R4Si), or disila-terfenadine (1d; R3COH ¡ú R3SiOH, R4C ¡ú R4Si). Sila-substitution of the quaternary carbon atom of the histaminic H1 antagonist fexofenadine (2a) affords sila-fexofenadine (2b; R3COH ¡ú R3SiOH). The silicon compounds were synthesized in multistep syntheses, and the identities of these compounds and their precursors were established by elemental analyses and multinuclear NMR studies. Some of the precursors were addnl. characterized by single-crystal x-ray diffraction. The pharmacol. profiles of silicon compounds were assessed across a range of histaminic receptor binding assays (radioligand binding studies at histamine central H1, peripheral H1, H2, and H3 receptors). The silicon compounds, within exptl. error, exhibited an affinity and selectivity profile similar to their corresponding carbon analogs.

Menz, J. published the artcileUsage pattern-based exposure screening as a simple tool for the regional priority-setting in environmental risk assessment of veterinary antibiotics: A case study of north-western Germany, Application In Synthesis of 140-28-3, the publication is Chemosphere (2015), 42-48, database is CAplus and MEDLINE.

Veterinary antibiotics (VAs) are widely recognized as important environmental contaminants. Despite the extensive use of antibiotic agents in meat and poultry production and the known resistance problems in human and veterinary medicine, detailed knowledge about usage patterns of VAs in Germany is still scarce. This lack of knowledge severely impacts current research on the environmental risk of VAs, but it is expected that recently established surveillance programs for antimicrobial drug usage will close this knowledge gap. Therefore, a spatially more precise environmental risk assessment and management might become possible in the near future. In this study, a new usage pattern-based exposure screening (UPES) approach for the comprehensive environmental exposure assessment of veterinary antibiotics was preliminarily assessed using approximated scenarios of antimicrobial substance usage in German meat and poultry production Resulting predicted manure concentrations covered seven orders of magnitude ranging from ng kg-1 to g kg-1 dry weight (dw). Beyond that 14 antibiotic substances of 10 different antimicrobial classes were predicted to have the potential to occur in soil concentrations higher than 100 ¦Ìg kg-1 dw. These findings raise further questions regarding the environmental exposure and risks of frequently used VAs, especially in regions with higher-than-average livestock d. With this case study we demonstrate that UPES simplifies to account for differing local agricultural factors and therefore facilitates priority-setting on a regional level. In this context a simple prioritization scheme for environmental assessment of VAs, considering both the expected environmental concentration and the frequency of application, is proposed in this paper.

When considering interaction forces in surfactant-stabilized colloidal dispersions a factor that has been rarely discussed is the possible effect of osmotic force due to overlapping adsorbed surfactant monolayers. In the present work, the osmotic repulsion force is built-in on the basis of DLVO mechanics and based on Fischer’s consideration of the analogous situation for adsorbed polymer layers on solid surfaces and on Langmuir’s earlier concept of osmotic pressure excess due to overlapping adsorption layers. The advanced method for calculation of the net repulsion force in overlapping surfactant monolayers is developed and applied to real adsorbed surfactant systems. We show that the value of disjoining pressure can reach values as high as 8 MPa for the condition of fully overlapping surfactant adsorption layers, based on the calculation of the first virial term of the general expression for osmotic pressure. Thus, we have shown that osmotic forces can be substantial at distances of close interfacial approach, and that they can easily be of the same or greater order of magnitude than the forces that have been more conventionally considered.
