Thermal stability of alkyl and arylalkyl quaternary ammonium cation (onium) in starting chloride salt, in organoclay obtained after exchange with montmorillonite (MMT) and after mixing of the organoclay with isoprene rubber was examined using conventional TGA and by mass spectrometry pyrolysis/GC-MS. Degradation was observed to occur at T ¡Ý 170 ¡ãC for organoclays and the main volatile compounds were identified as tertiary amines, chloroalkanes and alkenes. Mechanisms for their formation are proposed and the role of residual onium chloride and basic centers of layered silicate is discussed.

Non-alc. fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently a growing epidemic disease that can lead to cirrhosis and hepatic cancer when it evolves into non-alc. steatohepatitis (NASH), a gap not well understood. To characterize this disease, pigs, considered to be one of the most similar to human exptl. animal models, were used. To date, all swine-based settings have been carried out using rare predisposed breeds or long-term experiments Herein, we fully describe a new exptl. swine model for initial and reversible NASH using cross-bred animals fed on a high saturated fat, fructose, cholesterol, cholate, choline and methionine-deficient diet. To gain insight into the hepatic transcriptome that undergoes steatosis and steatohepatitis, we used RNA sequencing. This process significantly up-regulated 976 and down-regulated 209 genes mainly involved in cellular processes. Gene expression changes of 22 selected transcripts were verified by RT-qPCR. Lipid droplet area was pos. associated with CD68, GPNMB, LGALS3, SLC51B and SPP1, and neg. with SQLE expressions. When these genes were tested in a second experiment of NASH reversion, LGALS3, SLC51B and SPP1 significantly decreased their expression. However, only LGALS3 was associated with lipid droplet areas. Our results suggest a role for LGALS3 in the transition of NAFLD to NASH.

This work demonstrates an effective solid-liquid extraction procedure, in combination with a microscale dispersive solid-phase extraction cleanup, for the determination of 44 polycyclic aromatic compounds, including the potent mutagenic compound 3-nitrobenzathrone and its metabolites 3-aminobenzanthrone and 3-acethyl-aminobenzanthrone, in Phallusia nigra. A new customized device was constructed using borosilicate glass to perform the ultrasound-assisted extraction of the compounds The dispersive solid-phase extraction cleanup was carried out in a microscale device filter and optimized though multivariate statistical tools. The optimum conditions were determined as 93 mg of activated alumina/silica gel (1:1, weight/weight) and vortex-assisted agitation for 3.50 min. The limit of detection ranged from 5.47 to 9.89 ng g-1, 7.27 to 1,524 ng g-1, and 42.7 to 108 ng g-1 for PAHs, oxy-PAHs, and nitro-PAHs, resp. The ANOVA test (p < 0.05) indicated no evidence of lack-of-fit for the matrix-matched anal. curves, with R2 > 0.990. The recoveries on the DORM-3 reference standard material ranged from 75.3% to 120%, 77.6% to 117%, and 70% to 124% for PAHs, oxy-PAHs, and nitro-PAHs, resp. The developed procedure was applied to nine ascidians samples. PAHs, oxy-PAHs, and nitro-PAHs were detected in the samples at concentrations ranging from 5.02 to 489 ng g-1 dw, 28.8 to 6,587 ng g-1, and 32.3 to 1,635 ng g-1, resp. Thus, the proposed procedure was comprehensive, precise, accurate, and suitable for the determination of these compounds in ascidians samples.

In two different goat farms, producing Picodon and Mutschli cheese resp., two groups of lactating goats were fed alfalfa pellets (ALF) or sainfoin pellets (SNF) for 6 wk. The cheeses produced at the end of the trial were analyzed for sensory properties, composition, fatty acid profile, proteolysis, and rheol. The SNF Picodon had higher ”goat” and ”farm” aroma and odor, and higher bitter taste, compared with the ALF Picodon. The SNF Picodon showed lower dry matter than the ALF Picodon, leading to differences in texture and mouthfeel. The SNF Mutschli had a different mouthfeel than the ALF Mutschli. In a triangle test, consumers were able to perceive a difference in both Picodon and Mutschli between ALF and SNF groups. In both Picodon and Mutschli, feeding sainfoin increased cheese proteolysis and modified cheese fatty acid profile, resulting in higher polyunsaturated fatty acids proportion and lower n-6/n-3 ratio.
