Direct syntheses of silicas containing organofluorinated groups have been achieved by co-condensation of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and a organofluorinated triethoxysilane, RF(CH2)2Si(OEt)3 [RF = CF3(CF2)5 or CF3], in the presence of either the neutral fluorinated surfactant n-CF3(CF2)7(CH2)2NH2 or the cationic one, n-CF3(CF2)7(CH2)2NMe3+I. Microporous silica with a wormhole structure containing the C8 fluorinated chain was obtained in the presence of the nonionic surfactant. It was shown that the use of fluorinated surfactants allows the incorporation of an amount of (fluorinated) chains located in the channel pores that is superior to that obtained by using a hydrogenated surfactant. The cationic surfactant used under acidic conditions allowed the incorporation of only a low amount of the C8 fluorinated chain, leading to a poorly structured material. In contrast, a mesoporous silica containing the CF3(CH2)2 group and showing a hexagonal arrangement was obtained under the same exptl. conditions.

The (cmc)I determined by the I method are 2.0 ¡Á 10-4, 2.2 ¡Á 10-4, and 4.3 ¡Á 10-4 M, resp.; the (cmc)W determined by H2O solubilization are 2.0 ¡Á 10-3, 3.5 ¡Á 10-3, and 10.5 ¡Á 10-3 M, resp. The (cmc)I are lower by 1 order of magnitude than the corresponding (cmc)W. The reason is probably that aggregates with low aggregation number which begin to form at (cmc)I cannot solubilize H2O. The H2O solubilization starts only when the aggregation number of reverse micelles is high enough, which occurs at (cmc)W (a concentration much higher than (cmc)I). These experiments show that reverse micelles of DAA, DAP, and DAB are able to solubilize ¡Ü 4.3, ¡Ü 9.4, and ¡Ü 13.5 mols. of H2O per surfactant mol., resp. According to a simplified spherical reverse micelle model, the aggregation numbers of the DAA, DAP, and DAB reverse micelles which solubilize the limiting amount of H2O are 24, 122, and 252; the radii of the H2O pools are 0.90, 2.02, and 2.90 nm, and the radii of the free H2O pools are 0.33, 1.68 and 2.58 nm, resp.

Ga(OH)3, which was conventionally obtained as a residue of Zn hydrometallurgy, floated completely in water with a collector of Na dodecylsulfate (SDS) at pH 4-7.0 and did not float entirely with a dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) collector in the same conditions, while Ga(OH)3 in an aqueous solution saturated with gypsum floated to some extent with either of the collectors. Because gypsum was quite floatable in these conditions, some depressants for the selective flotation of Ga(OH)3 from gypsum were used and soluble starch and gum arabic were effective as a depressant for Ga(OH)3 in DAA flotation.
